The "Warsaw School"of modern architecture, which developed between the wars, may be characterised by its creativity within the boundaries of rational design and this tradition is carried on today. It includes strong emphasis on practice as part of the student's education and many of the faculty have been and continue to be actively engaged in the profession. In addition, research is conducted in such areas as History of Architecture and City Planning, the field of Preservation and such areas as Urban and Physical Planning, as well as CAAD techniques.


General information

The Faculty of Architecture is one of the largest faculties of Warsaw University of Technology, with a total student enrolment of about 1200. The student-faculty ratio is very advantageous with an academic staff of 140, including 25 professors, many of whom are nationally recognised architects with considerable creative achievements. This is also one of the largest schools of architecture in the country, established in 1915 and originally housed in the Warsaw School of Fine Arts. Since 1916 it has been located in an eclectic, turn-of-century building in the central area of Warsaw.
Prominent graduates of the faculty include the famous architects Maciej Nowicki, Stanislaw Noakowski, Bohdan Pniewski, Romuald Gutt, Barbara and Stanislaw Brukalski, Jerzy Hryniewiecki, Jan Boguslawski, Oskar Sosnowski and Helena and Szymon Syrkus. These and other graduates have contributed to the development of modern architecture and planning, as well as to the establishment of the Polish School of Preservation and Conservation.

Admission

Candidates to the Faculty are accepted on the basis of a two-part written evaluation, comprising a test and drawing. The evaluation is designed to examine the candidates? skills in sketching and geometry, their interests in architecture and fine arts, as wll as their spatial imagination and creativity. The selection procedure results in very low percentage of students? drop-outs (about 5%).

Facilities

The Faculty building provides an environment of facilities and resources that support and facilitate the student's academic process. Apart from standard lecture halls, design studios and classrooms, students are offered: a computer laboratories (34 terminals for students) and drawing, painting, sculpture and modelling rooms. Students have access to a large faculty library (45 000 volumes) networked with the general university library computer system and the Internet. In the Faculty building there is also the Faculty Club (with cafeteria) that serves as a centre for student activities, architectural bookstore that offers books of the most significant architectural publishers, draughtsmen's shop, exhibition halls and gallery (with show windows for student works); a historic drawings archive; academic staff offices and rooms for the Student Self - Government and other student associations. A new Virtual Environment Laboratory is being prepared with additional 15 terminals for students and high performance comput

The University Centre for Physical Education, located in the vicinity, promotes physical training and sports among both students and the whole academic community of the University.

Low-cost accommodation and meals are available for students in the University dormitories located close to the University Central Campus
